The Parthenon or Elgin Marbles in the British Museum |
Officially, the Greek Government has called on UNESCO to wade
into the restitution issue. And in response, the world body, according to
sources has sent a letter to the British Government over the return of Greek’s
cultural objects.
For 20 years, the issues of Greek’s demand for the return of
its iconic Parthenon Marble was always raised at UNESCO’s several gatherings without
any weight of the world’s body backing any serious discussion.
With the latest development, UNESCO, however appears to be avoiding
being dragged into the ring so suggests the tone of the letter said to have
been sent to Foreign Secretary, William Hague, the Culture Secretary, Maria Miller,
and the Director of the British Museum, Neil MacGrego. The letter, a source
says notifies the British government of Greek government's decision to contact
UNESCO over the return of the Parthenon Marbles sculptures.
