Printmakers Launch Association

Widening of professional groups, according to specialised areas, has received a boost as a new entrant Visual Printmakers Association of Nigeria (VPAN) made its formal entry recently. Foundation members include masters as well as younger generation printmaking.

Shortly after VPAN's meeting, held at master printmaker, Dr Bruce Onobrakpeya's studio in Papa Ajao, Mushin, Lagos, the young association made its mission known. A statement from the group lists its aims and objectives: "to propagate the art of printmaking in Nigeria; promote the use of both traditional and innovative printmaking techniques; offer information on prints and printmaking for both its members and the Nigerian public as well as the world at large; to hold a bi-annual print exhibition; provide inspiration through discussions by professionals via fertilisation of ideas in materials and methods in printmaking; and encourage understanding among printmakers and strengthen our ideas for socialization and economic prospect. Also included is constant retreat of printmakers at Agbarha-Otor for production and organising conferences, seminars, printmaking discuss and travels in printmaking. 


 The Lagos gathering came after what the group described as its "inaugural meeting" held in August during the 17th Harmattan Workshop Retreat (2015) at Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, Nigeria.

 Members in attendance at the Lagos meeting where formal announcement of VPAN was made included Prof. Salubu Onakufe, Akpevwe Erefuoma, Oronwole Oluwole, Moses Unokwah, Francis O. Amadi, Oluseye Dele and Timipre Willis Amah. Other founding members include Afueru Onakufe, Orode Onakufe, Prof. Frank Ugiomoh, Dr. Itido Iyang and Mr. Francis Amadi.


  From Agbarha-Otor, where the seed of the association was planted, members disclosed that the professional body emerged "after due consultation with Dr Onobrakpeya." Also Prof Salubi Onakufe was named as interim chairman of the group while Mr. Timipre Willis Amah is Secretary and Oluseye Dele, Publicity Secretary. The group has made Dr Onabrakpeye its Life Patron/Fellow, and stated that “Exco will consult widely before nominating anybody as a patron.”


  Listed among decisions taken are that “constitution drafting committee be headed by the President and the and Vice through an online contribution; he Vice President should find out what is needed for the registration of the organization and inform the Exco; registration of new members and Annual Dues of N3, 000; Social Secretary is to find out all about the account opening."
