Art Gallery for Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka

Kongi's Harvest Art Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos, Nigeria
In Lagos, Nigeria, a new art gallery has been named after the Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka.

At the opening ceremony, yesterday, the Lagos State State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola who led the event said the gallery is named Kongi's Harvest Art Gallery to appreciate the literary giant's role in the growth of African art and culture, home and in the Diaspora.

Kongi's Harvest is one of Soyinka's most popular plays, and an iconic name in African literature. In fact the Nobel Laureate is fondly called Kongi, by his admirers.

A section of the gallery, according to sources from the government, will house some of Soyinka's important items such as books and others that could be classified as artefacts.

The opening of the Kongi Harvest's Gallery was also the beginning of the yearly Lagos Black Heritage Festival (LBHF) 2012, of which Soyinka is the consultant.

Kongi's Harvest Gallery is located inside the colonial-built prison now converted to a public use known as Freedom Park, on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
