Bostwana-born artist wins top prize at a U.S. biennial



A Botswana-born, Los Angeles, U.S.-based artist, Meleko Mokgosi has won the new Mohn Award, worth a $100, 000.

Mohn Award is regarded as America’s version of the prestigious Turner Prize of the U.K. The award is funded by the local philanthropists and art collectors, Jarl and Pamela Mohn – under the Hammer’s “Made in LA” biennial, which holds in August to September. The 2012 edition ends on September 2, 2012.

Mokgosi’s work, a depiction of African resistance, according to the organisers, The Hammer Museum, L.A. was voted by the public via online out of five finalists from 60 preliminary artists that participated. 

It’s an installation Pax Kaffraria: Sikhuselo embumbulu, 2012, about post-colonial Africa. Part of the themes includes “bulletproof” in Xhosa language.
