Alakija denies campaigning for Lagos governorship race

As politicians prepare for the 2015 elections in Nigeria,  celebrated fashion designer and businesswoman, Folorunsho Alakija has denied campaigning for Lagos State governorship race, purportedly being carried out on her behalf.

In a statement, Alakija noted that posters and fliers carrying her name and picture as a Lagos State governorship aspirant were circulating in Ikorodu and some parts of the state few days ago. Alakija, a native of Ikorodu. a Lagos suburb, refuted the publicity as untrue, and that she has no such ambition.

"It has come to my notice that there are posters and fliers being circulated in Ikorodu and other parts of Lagos State, announcing me as a governorship aspirant,” Alakija said. "This is not true and I hereby state that I have no such intention.”

And while the identity of the individuals or group behind the mystery posters and fliers was not known, Alakija stressed that she was unaware of anyone carrying out a political campaign on her behalf. "Therefore I disassociate myself from any persons, or group of persons, posters or fliers in circulation about me contesting for governorship."

Apart from the posters and fliers said to have been circulating in the state, it was also rumoured that Alakija could take a shot at the number one seat of the state during the 2015 elections.. In fact, ahead of Alakija’s refutal, a newspaper report  has also carried the news of her as an aspirant in the state’s governorship race.

Alakija who is the founder of an NGO, Rose of Sharon Foundation (ROSF) reiterated her commitment to the service of humanity in alleviating the sufferings of the less privileged people.
 "I have been paying attention to my calling from God to look after widows and orphans through The Rose of Sharon Foundation,
most importantly, to God’s work as a Minister of his Word through His Ministry committed to us as the Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International.”
  
She added that “God has not called me into politics and I have never been involved in politics.”

A former president of Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN), Alakija is currently one of the leading oil magnates in Africa. According to Forbes rating of Alakija’s Net Worth, she was worth $2.5 bn as of November 2013. Late last year, Alakija was honoured by Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), Lagos, for her entrepreneurial skill and philanthropic activities.

The Rector of the college, Dr Kudirat Ladipo noted that Alakija’s achievement is a pride to Nigerian women. “Alakija makes us proud that as a girl child, and with determination, it is possible to reach any level in life”.
