Okwui Enwezor as co-convener for Symposium at Sharjah's new Africa Hall

A former director at Haus der Kunst and Nigerian-born art historian, Okwui Enwezor returns to the international art space after his strained exit at the German museum. Enwezor has been announced as co-convener of 'The Symposium 5-plus-1: Rethinking Abstraction', a part of the reopening activities of Africa Hall, Sharjah , UAE.


Presented by Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) and held in conjunction with SAF’s exhibition Frank Bowling: Mappa Mundi , the symposium, which has   Hoor Al Qasimi and Salah M. Hassan as co-conveners, according to progra- mmes of the events, holds on Sunday, 30 September 2018.

Africa Hall will serve as a venue for the activities of the newly-established Africa Institute.
The reopening of Sharjah’s Africa Hall starts on 25 September. Other activities include performances by Zied Zouari; Youssou N’Dour and The Fathy Salama Orchestra; Youssou N’Dour and Le Super Étoile de Dakar; Oumou Sangaré; Mulatu Astatke; Lisa Simone; DJ Peter Adjaye; and Somi.

The announcement of reopening made by Hoor Al Qasimi, President of The Africa Institute,  recalled that Africa Hall was initially opened in Sharjah in 1976. Africa Hall’s first cultural and political event then was the Arab-African Symposium, held 14-18 December 1976.


The new Africa Hall, which has been rebuilt on the same site as the original building, will serve as the meeting place for conferences, symposia, lectures, film screenings, stage plays and performances related to the activities of The Africa Institute. An additional building which will later permanently house The Africa Institute will constructed adjacent to Africa Hall, designed by Sir David Adjaye.
 
"Sharjah has always been at the crossroads of various cultures, with great influence from Africa due to geographic proximity and economic exchange. The establishment of The Africa Institute, the first research and archival institution of its kind in the region, pays tribute to this rich history",’ said Al Qasimi. "We are also pleased to re-launch Africa Hall which, since its founding in Sharjah in 1976, created a lasting legacy of cross-cultural connection and artistic expression".

Dr. Salah Hassan, Goldwin Smith Professor and Director, Institute for Comparative Modernities, Cornell University said the newly rebuilt Africa Hall is hoped to revive the golden era of the building in the 1970s and 1980s when it served as the hub of cultural events that included literary, theatrical and musical performances, and poetry reading, in addition to conferences and symposia on ranges of topics."    Hassan is academic advisor to The Africa Institute, Sharjah.

The opening programme for Africa Hall will run from 25 to 30 September, including performances by Zouari, N’Dour and The Fathy Salama Orchestra (25 September), N’Dour and Le Super Étoile de Dakar (26 September), Sangaré (27 September), Astatke (28 September), Simone, DJ  Adjaye (29 September), and Somi (30 September), as well as a screening of the film An Opera of the World (2017), directed by Manthia Diawara (28 September).
