Okwui Enwezor (1963-2019)

Okwui Enwezor.

Few weeks after the death of Bisi Silva, another Nigerian-born international curator of repute, Okwui Enwezor, 55 is dead.

Based in the U.S., but worked mostly in Europe in the past one decade,
Enwezor had battle with cancer for several years. His resignation, mid last year, as artistic director of Munich, Germany-based Haus der Kunst museum was controversially linked to his health issue.

Interestingly, Enwezor, last month, was announced to co-curate a project Triumphant Scale, on works by Ghanaian artist, El Anatsui, at the same Haus der Kunst. U.S.-based art historian Chika Okeke-Agulu, was to co-curate the proposed project.

Enwezor will be remembered, among other achievement of his, for being the first non-European to direct Documenta, a five-yearly show in Kassel, Germany,  in 2002. He was also the first black person curator to direct the over a century-old Venice Biennale, in Italy.
